Before you begin

Silence in your meetings is not agreement.

You ask if there are any concerns. Nobody says a word. You take that as a yes. Then the concerns show up later: in the hallway, in a group chat, in a resignation letter.

Inside the checklist

Seven questions. One honest look at your team.

Each question comes with why it matters, the red flags, and what to do if you can't answer confidently.

  1. 01

Would your team feel comfortable disagreeing with you in a meeting?

  2. 02

What happens when someone brings you bad news?

  3. 03

Do people admit mistakes early, or hide them until they can't?

  4. 04

Who speaks in your meetings, and who never does?

  5. 05

When did you last say “I don't know” or “I got that wrong” out loud?

  6. 06

Do your people know their input leads somewhere?

  7. 07

Is your accountability built on investment, or on fear?

Plus your score. Count your “Not yet” boxes and know exactly where to start.

Why this checklist?

I'm Dr. Jay. I've led in the U.S. Navy and in cybersecurity for more than 15 years, where one unspoken concern can become a real incident. Then I earned a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology to understand why people speak up, or stay silent.

  • Ph.D., Industrial & Organizational Psychology
  • 12-year U.S. Navy veteran
  • 15+ years as a cybersecurity leader
  • First woman and African American to lead a federal agency's SOC
  • Led civilian and U.S. Naval mentorship programs

Most leadership advice is written by people who studied leadership. This checklist comes from someone who has led through it.
